Jensen Memorial Scholarship

The Nancy Lorraine Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Jensen in memory of their remarkable daughter. By age 35, when she died suddenly, Nancy had already distinguished herself as an outstanding chemical engineer whose work resulted in important advances within the field of weather satellite photography. It is the wish of Dr. and Mrs. Jensen to encourage young women to enter the field of science and engineering by offering scholarships in her memory.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for a scholarship from the Nancy Lorraine Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund:

  • a) The applicant must be an American citizen not younger than 17 and not older than 35 on the date that the scholarship application is submitted.
  • b) The applicant must be a current female member or the daughter or granddaughter of a current member of Sons of Norway, provided that such membership shall have been of at least three years duration on the date the application is submitted.
  • c) THE APPLICANT MUST BE A FULL-TIME UNDERGRADUATE WHO HAS COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE TERM (QUARTER, SEMESTER) OF HER STUDIES AFTER BEING ACCEPTED AS A MAJOR EITHER IN CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS OR IN CHEMICAL, ELECTRICAL OR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. THE GRANT IS INTENDED TO BE USED FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDY.
  • d) The applicant must have attained an SAT score of at least 1800, a math score of 600 or better, or an ACT score of at least 26.

How To Apply

Applicants must submit an application form

With the application form you must send a statement on your SAT or ACT score, an essay (not to exceed 500 words) giving proof of your accomplishments to date and describing how you intend to pursue your career.

Indicate your long-term career goals and your involvement in Sons of Norway, youth, community or research activities. A sealed official copy of your latest grade transcript must be sent with application. At least three sealed letters of recommendation must be furnished.

The letters (from the Dean of your school or the head of your department, and others: teachers, youth leaders or someone else not related to you but who knows you well) should describe your character, accomplishments and abilities.

Amount of Award

The annual scholarship award will be no less than 50% for one term (quarter or semester) and no more than 100% of the tuition for one year. Scholarships awarded will be made jointly payable to the student and her institution of learning. Any applicant may receive three awards during her undergraduate study.

How Winners Are Selected

The winners are selected by a committee appointed by the President of the Sons of Norway Foundation. Notification of award will be made within 10 weeks of deadline.

The criteria for selection are:

  • a) long-term career goals and clarity of study plan
  • b) academic potential and evidence of ability to succeed
  • c) letters of recommendation giving specific evidence of good character, eagerness and earnestness and ambition in the field of science and engineering.

Note: Previous holding of the Nancy Lorraine Jensen Memorial Scholarship gives priority to the applicant.

Deadline for Applications

THE APPLICATIONS MUST BE POST-MARKED NO LATER THAN APRIL 1.

Revision Policy

The general conditions and procedures under which scholarship/grant awards are made may be reviewed periodically by the Sons of Norway Foundation. Applicant eligibility may be modified at the sole discretion of Sons of Norway Foundation. However, any previously-approved scholarship/grant award will not be affected by new conditions or procedures. In cases where a student has secured application materials early, it is recommended that the student check www.sonsofnorway.com in Nov. prior to submission, making certain that no revisions have been made which will affect the upcoming scholarship period.

Checklist

  • Submit a recent photo (headshot) no smaller than 3” X 4”
  • Submit a letter of application on a separate sheet, not to exceed 500 words, listing your accomplishments to date, and describing how your work can honor the scholarship, and how you intend to pursue your career.
  • Indicate your long-term career goals, your involvement in Sons of Norway, youth, community or research activities.
  • Attach to the application on a separate sheet the name, address phone # and e-mail address of each of those who are writing letters of recommendation for you (including the Dean of your school or head of your department, and others: teachers, youth leader or someone else not related to you, but who knows you well) describing your character, accomplishments and abilities.
  • Application form completed and signed
  • Official grade transcript and SAT score
  • Letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes by the reference source)
  • Essays
  • Recent photo (headshot) no smaller than 3” X 4”

brief written report, with photos of your experiences is welcome.
