Synopsis
The great migration of the nineteenth century radically expanded the area of Norwegian settlement, experience and influence. It was a movement of people that is unrivaled in Norwegian history, except perhaps for the explosive westward sweeps of conquest and exploration during the Viking Age. Norwegian immigrants to America were well aware of the similarities between their own wanderings and their ancestors' forays to the west, and they reassured the comparison. This book is dedicated to those who left.
