Subject: [SCAND]: Teen Hardanger fiddler to compete in National Spelling Bee
My 14-year-old fiddling daughter Jenny Solheim earned a trip to compete
in the National Spelling Bee in June. She won the Nebraska/Western Iowa
state bee to qualify. Jenny plays hardingfele at quite a high level and
does Scandinavian folk dance.
The National Spelling Bee is a five-day event, with the final 40 or 50
spellers appearing on ESPN on June 2. Jenny is definitely one of the
kids with a chance to make it into the top 50. We hope she'll be asked
to spell "lutefisk" or "rosemaling" (she taught herself Norwegian and
Swedish in order to read her CD liner notes.)
Also, we often incorporate Norwegian fiddling and dance into our
bookstore events (I write children's books). Our family is doing a
Norwegian folk dance and music presentation at Little Shop of Stories
Children's Bookstore in Decatur, Georgia, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 10.
http://www.littleshopofstories.com/
Address: 133A East Court Square in Decatur. Besides playing
hardingfele, Jenny is a fantastic fiddler on her great-great-grandfather
Ole Johnson Brokke's 1918 regular fiddle. Go to http://jamessolheim.com
for more information about our bookstore event.
