Vestfold fylke, Norway

Vestfold is a county in Norway, bordering Buskerud and Telemark. The county administration is in Tønsberg. Vestfold is located west of the Oslofjord, as the name indicates. It includes many smaller, but well-known towns in Norway, such as Larvik, Sandefjord, Tønsberg and Horten.
The river Numedalslågen runs through the district. Many islands are located at the coast. Vestfold is mostly dominated by lowland and is among the best agricultural areas of Norway. Winters last about three months, while pleasant summer temperatures last from May to September, with a July average of 17°C (Tønsberg climate).
Principle Industries
Vestfold is known for shipping and sailing. Formerly a headquarters for whaling fleets, the coastal towns of Vestfold now engage in fishing and shipbuilding. Some lumbering is carried on in the interior. The district also includes some of the best farmland in Norway.
Official Language
Vestfold is the only county in which all municipalities have declared Bokmål to be their official written form of the Norwegian language.

Museums in Vesfold Fylke
- Svelvik Museum - The collections and the Museum Society were founded by local historian and journalist Sigfred L. Eier of Svelvik, Norway on January 11 1937. The Museum's collection today consists of more than 3000 registered items.
- Preus Museum - Preus museum is Norway’s national museum of photography. With a collection covering all aspects of the history of photography located in Horten, Norway.
- Midgard Historisk Senter ( Midgard Historic Center) - History and heritage, located south of Horten, Norway offers exhibitions that include: Vestfold's history through the past 12,000 years, Everyday life in Viking times, and the Norse Gods.
- Haugar Art Museum - The Haugar Art Museum is located in the former Sjømannskolen – college of nautic professions – right in the centre of Tønsberg. The Haugar collection comprises about 160 works.
- Vestfold Museum - Located in Tønsberg, the Vestfold fylkesmuseum is Vestfolds oldest cultural-historical folkemuseum. It is the heir to the old museum from 1894 Tønsberg Tønsberg and maritime museum. Collection from these museums came to form the basis for the new county comprehensive museum from 1939.
- Whaling Museum - History of whaling, in Sandefjord The History of how different nations, cultures and companies have pursued whaling throughout the ages has been the main theme of the whaling museum for the past 90 years.
Lighthouses in Vesfold Fylke:
- Lille Færder (Tristein) Lighthouse Station - Færder lighthouse is situated on the island Tristein off Tjøme in the Oslo Fjord.
- Stavernsodden Lighthouse Station - Staversodden lighthouse station is on an island off Stavern on the same island as the Citadel with its buildings and fortifications that are worthy of preservation.
- Store Færder Lighthouse Station - Færder lighthouse was first established in 1697and stood on the island Store Færder, just outside of Tjøme in the Oslo Fjord.
- Svenner Lighthouse Station - Svenner Lighthouse Station stands on an island off Larvik. The cast iron lighthouse tower dates from 1900.
- Torgersøy Lighthouse Station - Torgersøy lighthouse station stands on an island off Tønsberg and was established as an approach light to Vallø Saltverk.
Points of Interest
- Høyjord Stave Church - Located in Andebu near Larvik, the oldest part of this stav church dates from the end of the 12th century.
- The Kjaerra Waterfalls Park - The Park, located in Lardal in Vestfold, Norway covers areas on both sides of the river, derives its name from the famous Kjærra Waterfalls, where the river splits into two separate courses: the eastern falls and the western falls.
