A Norwegian Immigrant - Formation of a Dream
Time were difficult for some Norwegians who longed to have land of their own. Young Ludvig was no exception. He was orphaned by the age of nine and lived with relatives until he made the decision as the age of 21 to leave Norway for the United States.
These are a representative sampling of some of the early documents you might find on Norwegian immigrants that included the Vaccination certificate, Attests from jobs held, Baptismal and Confirmation records and a Note Payable to relatives as a loan to purchase the steamship ticket to America.
Cowpox Vaccination Certificate 1901

Ludvig Kristian Gjønvig,
Born in Trondhjem to the parents: the carpenter Johan Laurits Gjønvig and his wife Anna Oline, and living in Trondhjem, 9 5/12 years old, was vaccinated with cowpox by me, the undersigned, in the year 1901 on the 26th of June. Upon careful examination between the 7th and 9th day after the vaccination, I found all the signs which prove them to be genuine cowpox; namely, they were whole and undamaged, filled with a clear liquid, depressed in the middle, and surrounded by a red circle;
Ludvig Kristian Gjønvig
has thus properly undergone a genuine case of cowpox, which protects him from smallpox, which is hereby certified upon my honor and conscience.
Trondhjem, 3rd July 1901.
